With an area of 64,055 square kilometres and a population of almost 4,500,000, Khuzestan Province is one of the 31 provinces of Iran. The capital of the province is Ahvaz.
The name of the province comes from the name given to the first inhabitants of the province: the Khuzi people.

Khuzestan Province has ancient origins, as numerous archaeological ruins dating back to 8000 BC have been found. Numerous civilisations and empires have developed here, such as the Elamite Empire.

Start your journey in the capital of the region: Ahvaz. Bordered by the Karun River, the city has a very hot desert climate. Go for a walk near the White Bridge, built during the Second World War, which crosses the river. From the bridge, you can approach many groups of seagulls.

It is also possible to take short boat trips on the river.

Don't hesitate to go further to discover other towns in the province such as Shush. In Shush, you can discover the historical site of Tchogha Zanbil, a ziggurat founded by King Untash-Napirishaissue and stemming from the Elamite civilization. It is one of the only religious buildings whose ruins are still preserved and is also considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Don't forget to visit the Archaeological Site of Shush where you can discover ancient Persian ruins. You will have the opportunity to visit the remains of the palace of Darius I, during the Achaemenid Empire. The site also has a museum full of incredible historical remains.

Nearby is the Tomb of Daniel, a shrine considered a sacred resting place for the Hebrew prophet Daniel. It is also considered a place of pilgrimage.

Other Iranian cities in Khuzestan Province are also worth visiting. All the cities in the province are full of history and have an interesting ancient past to discover. There are many relics and landscapes to be seen.
